About

Andrew Finn Magill is a fiddler and violinist who crosses many genres, as well as a teacher and media composer. He has appeared on PBS, NPR and TEDx, and his honors include a North Carolina Arts Council fellowship for The Polaris Project (2023), a Fulbright fellowship (2009) and a 2024 spot among ten violinists invited to the Seifert Competition in Krakow, Poland, for jazz violin. He has three albums on Ropeadope Records and eleven self-released. He grew up learning bluegrass, swing, oldtime and Irish music at the Swannanoa Gathering, where he now runs Fiddle Week. He has toured with Peia, Rising Appalachia, Socks in the Frying Pan, John Doyle and Peter Mawanga, and leads projects including a duo with Alan Murray of Solas, his own quartet and the Brazilian trio Canta, Violino!. After finishing at the University of North Carolina in 2009, he lived for a year in Malawi, where he and Peter Mawanga wrote and produced Stories of AIDS: Mau a Malawi, a concept record in which each song portrays one person's HIV story, and from 2014 to 2016 he studied choro music in Rio de Janeiro.
