About

Old Salem Museums & Gardens tells the stories of Moravian, Black and Indigenous peoples of the early American South. Its museums include the Historic Town of Salem, the Gardens at Old Salem and the galleries at the Frank L. Horton Museum Center. The Horton center houses MESDA which the site ranks as the best collection of its type anywhere in the nation, with architecture, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, needlework, paintings and prints made and used in the early South. Historic interpreters bring the district to life for visitors of all levels, and Old Salem partners with schools and colleges on learning programs. It is committed to telling the truth about everyone who lived in Salem, including people of African descent, both enslaved and free, who helped build the town.
