About

Walker Center, formally named for John A. Walker, is a cultural venue and gathering place for Wilkes County and the surrounding area, located at Wilkes Community College. The college's foundation raised $2.2 million from 1,500 donors, ground was broken in March 1983, and the 33,000 square foot building opened with an 1,100 seat auditorium. Gordon MacRae and Anna Maria Alberghetti performed at the dedication on August 24, 1984, and WCC Theatre staged "The Music Man" there on October 24 of that year. In addition to performing arts and school events, it hosts meetings, weddings, conventions and banquets; a $1.9 million renovation in 2000 enlarged the ballroom and added a full kitchen. Most of the people visitors meet there are volunteers.
