About
The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra (GSO) aims to enrich cultural life in Greensboro and nearby areas through quality music and music education, presenting concerts, special events and learning programs. Its roots reach back to the 1920s, when musicians at Woman's College (now UNCG) began playing together under Henry Fuchs; the group became the Greensboro Orchestra in 1939 and later grew independent of the college, with the Greensboro Symphony Society formed in 1959. Dmitry Sitkovetsky served as Music Director for 20 years, a period that included the orchestra's relocation to the Steven Tanger Center, and Australian conductor Christopher Dragon was named the new Music Director at the start of the 2024/2025 season. Education programs include OrKIDStra classes for Head Start 4-year-olds, the Lillian Rauch Beginning Strings Program, the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra ensembles, and school concerts for more than 36,000 students a year. Musicians also play in the community, from retirement homes and juvenile detention centers to CaringSound at Cone Hospital.
