About
Wilkes Playmakers is a theatre group that offers stage performances, educational programs and community events meant to entertain, raise cultural awareness and foster inclusion. Its home is Benton Hall Community Arts Center, one of the oldest buildings in the area, which it also rents out for functions and gatherings. Benton Hall started life in 1913 as a school, the North Wilkesboro School, a grand and unusual building that was known locally for strong academics; at one point families from other districts paid for their children to attend. An addition in 1964/1965 brought a gym, classroom, band room and offices. The school closed in 1978, after which the building sat empty and fell into disrepair before local businessman Clarence Benton made a large donation toward its future.
