About
Hickory Ballet & Performing Arts (HBPA) aims to inspire its community through ballet and other performing arts. It began in 2011 as a school for classical ballet. In 2018, under executive leader Leanna Bodnar, it widened its curriculum, became a nonprofit and took its current name, and in 2022 it moved to Downtown Hickory, its first home of its own. Students ages 3 to adult can study Classical Ballet, Pointe, Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Acro or Musical Theatre, and Freshmen classes serve older beginners. Students perform in The Nutcracker each fall and another story ballet in spring, as well as a Junior musical and a full-length musical. HBPA also partners with groups such as the Western Piedmont Symphony and Hickory Museum of Art and offers partial scholarships.
