About Albemarle

Albemarle is the county seat of Stanly County, in the Piedmont at the eastern edge of the Charlotte area. The town was laid out on land given by Nehemiah Hearne’s heirs after the county formed in 1841 and it was incorporated in 1857. Cotton farming, trade and a brief gold rush in the Uwharrie Mountains gave way to textile mills, starting with Efird Manufacturing in 1896. In 1993 Albemarle was named a National Main Street City. Its National Register listings include the Opera House-Starnes Jewelers Building and several downtown historic districts, and the Stanly County Museum supports local history research. The restored Market Street Station now hosts a farmers market, and Morrow Mountain State Park, with a natural history museum, lies east of the city. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
