About
Historic Bath is a state historic site in the town of Bath on the Pamlico River, North Carolina's first town. European settlers arrived in the area in the 1690s, and the town was founded in 1705; by 1708 it had about 50 residents and 12 houses. Bath became the colony's first port, and its early years were shaped by political rivalries, wars with Native nations and piracy. It was even considered for the colonial capital in 1746, but it lost most of its trade once the county government relocated in the late 1700s. The original town limits now form a historic district. The site is run by North Carolina Historic Sites, which offers free general admission with a small fee for guided historic house tours, plus group and school field trip reservations.
