The town

About Harrisburg

Harrisburg is a town in southwestern Cabarrus County and a northeastern suburb of Charlotte. Concord borders it to the north and Charlotte, in Mecklenburg County, to the west. North Carolina Highway 49 runs through the center of town, heading southwest toward Charlotte and northeast toward Asheboro. Charlotte Motor Speedway lies about three miles north of the town center, inside Concord’s city limits. Harrisburg has a greenway network of a little over five miles, with many more miles proposed. It uses a council-manager form of government, with an eight-member town council and a separately elected mayor. Local public schools include Harrisburg Elementary and the Hickory Ridge elementary, middle and high schools. Racing driver Austin McDaniel is among the people tied to the town. Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Ordered by how much each subject could lift the overall grade, given its weight.

Next steps

  • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
  • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
  • Make sure local arts nonprofits file with an arts (NTEE “A”) code and the town’s address.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Harrisburg advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
