About Havelock
Havelock is a city in southern Craven County whose limits include most of the Cherry Point Marine Corps air station, home of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The area began in the late 1850s as Havelock Station, a depot on the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad, named for British officer Sir Henry Havelock. In 1862 Union troops came ashore nearby for the Battle of New Bern. During the 1800s turpentine and tar were key to the local economy. The air station arrived in 1940. Its Fleet Readiness Center East employs many residents, and the town was officially established in 1959. The Havelock Tourist and Events Center shows local history, including a diorama of a Civil War fort, and a park honors Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. The city sits between New Bern and Morehead City along U.S. 70. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
