About
The Belhaven Memorial Museum is a nonprofit that collects, preserves and displays historical and cultural objects and encourages interest in the history, culture, art and science of Belhaven, Beaufort County and eastern North Carolina. It grew from the collection of Mary Eva Blount Way, known as "Miss Eva," who began with buttons from her mother-in-law and gathered about 30,000 buttons from around the world, plus all manner of other items that friends and neighbors brought her. She first showed the collection from her home around 1940 to aid the Red Cross, and it spread into the family barn as it passed 10,000 items. After her death, townspeople carried the work forward, and the museum opened on April 1, 1965, upstairs in the historic Belhaven Town Hall, where visitors can step back into the nineteenth century through one woman's remarkable collection.
