About Lumberton
Lumberton is the county seat of Robeson County and sits on the Lumber River in the Coastal Plains region. General John Willis gave land for the new county’s seat in 1787 and the town took its name from the river. It grew as a shipping point for Navy lumber, and early stores were stocked with goods sent upriver from Georgetown, South Carolina, until a rail link to Wilmington arrived in 1860. Fires in 1870 and 1876 burned much of the business district, and most growth came after World War II. Hurricanes Matthew and Florence brought record flooding in 2016 and 2018. Visitors can reach the river from the Downtown Riverwalk, Luther Britt Park or James L. Stephens Memorial Park. The Carolina Theatre is one of its National Register sites. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
