About Morganton
Morganton is the seat of Burke County, set in the Catawba River valley at the edge of the Blue Ridge. In 1784 it became the first town in western North Carolina to receive a charter. Textile mills grew here in the early 1900s, though those jobs later moved offshore. State facilities such as Broughton Hospital, the state School for the Deaf and a campus of the School of Science and Mathematics are major employers, along with furniture plants. Since 2015 the Industrial Commons has supported co-ops working to revive textile and furniture work. The Municipal Auditorium hosts performances, the courthouse square has summer concerts, and the Morganton Festival brings vendors and live music after Labor Day. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
