The Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians, at Aquarium Park in downtown Bryson City, traces the history of fly fishing in the mountains. Displays cover the stories and facts behind the sport, intricate hand-tied flies, including one tied with polar bear hair, centuries of fly rods and reels such as old bamboo rods, and all kinds of tools and gadgets. The museum is self-guided, with staff on hand to answer questions about the exhibits or local fishing rules. It is meant for everyone, from seasoned anglers to families who know nothing about fishing. Admission is free, with donations welcome, and the Appalachian Rivers Aquarium next door shows native freshwater fish.
