The town

About Summerfield

Charles Bruce settled the area around 1769 and it became known as Bruce’s Crossroads. In February 1781 patriot troops under Henry Lee III fought British cavalry under Banastre Tarleton at the crossroads and forced them to retreat. A post office opened in 1812 and the community was renamed for evangelist John Summerfield. Governor Alexander Martin once had a house on the town square, and George Washington stayed there during the war; the Martin House standing today belonged to the governor’s son and is owned by the town. The Summerfield Historic District and the Summerfield School gym are on the National Register. Today the town is largely seen as a suburb of Greensboro. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

              Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
