About Waxhaw
Waxhaw and the surrounding region called The Waxhaws are named for the Waxhaw people who lived here before colonial settlement. Settlers of mostly German and Scots-Irish origin arrived in the mid-1700s. Andrew Jackson was born nearby in 1767. The Museum of the Waxhaws documents his ties to the area. The railroad arrived in 1888 and its tracks still run through the middle of town, flanked by green space and crossed by a historic footbridge. Cotton mills followed in the late 1800s. Today the town is known for antiques and dining, and the Waxhaw Historic District and the Pleasant Grove Camp Meeting Ground are on the National Register of Historic Places. Cane Creek Park lies south of town. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
