About Winterville
Winterville is a Pitt County town in the Greenville metropolitan area. Amos Graves Cox founded it in 1897. He was an inventor, farmer and businessman who refined and built a cotton planter first invented by his father. He thought about naming the town for his family but chose Winterville, after the Georgia town where his planters sold. The local middle school bears his name. Since the 1990s the town has grown both in homes and in businesses, with many new subdivisions. Recreation Park, the largest park, has an amphitheater for concerts and movie nights and hosts the Watermelon Festival each summer. Hillcrest Park has the only traffic garden in eastern North Carolina, a small painted streetscape for practicing safe biking and walking. The Cox-Ange House and the Renston Rural Historic District are on the National Register. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
