About

MESDA, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, is a leading center for researching Southern decorative arts and material culture, with what it calls the most comprehensive collection of its kind in the country along with related research resources. Its work on the history, material culture and decorative arts of the American South is recognized internationally. MESDA belongs to Old Salem Museums & Gardens, a living history site that interprets the early South through material culture, architecture and landscapes, with special attention to the Moravians in the state, to people of African descent both enslaved and free, and to the Indigenous peoples of the Southern Woodlands; besides MESDA, Old Salem includes the Historic Town of Salem and the Gardens at Old Salem.
