About
Ensemble Stage is a professional theater in Banner Elk that has brought live plays to High Country residents and visitors since 2009. Its 99-seat theater sits in the Historic Banner Elk School. Gary Smith, the artistic director, and Lisa Lamont, the managing director, have been with the company from the start; Smith has directed nearly 200 professional productions, and Lamont has stage managed more than 150 shows around the country, among them the "Aida" national tour. Alongside its season, the company offers theatre education meant to inspire and challenge the imagination and social skills of young people and adults. Through a professional tie to the theatre and dance department at Appalachian State University, students can audition, join readings, work on crews and appear in professional shows, and ASU faculty have worked as designers, directors and coaches.
