About

The Bascom is a visual arts center in Highlands, NC, set on a six-building, six-acre campus that was once a horse farm. It shows work by artists from the local level to the international one, work that might otherwise not reach Western North Carolina, and for 40 years it has served as a cultural resource for the region. Classes, workshops, lectures and seminars cover many mediums for artists of every age and skill level, with programs aimed at young people too. Visitors enter over an 87-foot-long covered bridge; the grounds hold a rebuilt 2,500 square-foot barn used as the ceramic studio, a three-story Main Building of 27,500 square feet, and the Horst Winkler trail, which pairs nature and sculpture with native plants, a brook, a waterfall and scenic views.
