About
The George M. Holmes Convocation Center serves Appalachian State University as a multipurpose venue for northwestern North Carolina. Planning began in 1986 as a way to improve campus facilities, and with legislative backing the project took close to 15 years to complete. The building houses facilities for the Department of Recreation Management and Physical Education and supports the university's academic work. Its calendar mixes university occasions such as commencement and college fairs with public programming: concerts, cultural events, trade shows, athletic contests and other large gatherings. The center was planned to meet both campus and regional needs, giving the area a space for education, events and cultural programs.
