About
Cannon Music Camp is a three-week residential summer music camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, running since 1969. It is open to dedicated young musicians from current eighth graders through graduating high school seniors, with study in voice and piano, woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion, plus harp and guitar. Campers play in ensembles such as band, orchestra, choir and jazz groups, take music theory classes, and get weekly private lessons and masterclasses from Hayes School of Music faculty and visiting artists. They live in the dorms and eat in the dining hall, giving them a preview of life as a college music major with more supervision. Extras include conducting, a second instrument, piano class and the Alexander Technique, along with guest artist performances.
