About
The Bascom Lamar Lunsford Festival at Mars Hill University ranks second among the longest-running folk festivals in the western part of the state. It carries the name of Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a musician and folklorist who spent his life gathering and championing the music of Southern Appalachia. The festival honors the region's mountain traditions with a full day of mountain music and dance on the upper quad. The festival has included an open jam led by master musicians, a ballad swap, a sing-along of Lunsford songs and a roundtable on the banjo player Carroll Best. Visitors are invited to bring blankets and camp chairs.
