The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra runs summer day camps for young musicians through its youth orchestra program, including a strings camp and a band camp at Arts XL. The band camp is for students 13 and up with at least a year on a wind, brass or percussion instrument, and offers small ensemble playing, group and individual coaching from FSO musicians, help with all-county and all-district auditions, and a concert on the final day. The orchestra itself dates to 1956, when local players first came together, and today it is a professional regional orchestra presenting a concert season, community concerts and school programs. Its youth orchestra ensembles, including the String Sinfonietta, perform winter and spring concerts.
