About

The Carolina Theatre in Greensboro began life in 1927 as a vaudeville house, opening on Halloween night and billed at the time as "The Showplace of the Carolinas." Nearly a century later it still serves downtown Greensboro, now presenting concerts across every genre, classic and independent film, and community theatre and dance. Local performers also appear upstairs in The Crown at the Carolina, a black-box loft theatre with exposed brick, tall ceilings and big lead-paned windows. The organization works to keep its landmark building preserved while equipping it as a modern performance space, and it partners with community groups on programming and education. The theatre is also candid about its past: its balcony was once segregated, and the building was integrated in June 1963. Today it describes itself as a space for all people, with more than 100,000 visitors passing through in a year.
