About

The Lamar Stringfield Music Camp is a summer camp in Raleigh that teaches young musicians orchestral and chamber music in a warm, fun setting. It was founded in 1979 by Phyllis Garriss, who taught music at Meredith College, to support music programs in Wake County schools by working alongside schoolteachers, and that remains central to its mission. The camp is named for Lamar Stringfield, founder of the North Carolina Symphony. Campers rehearse in orchestras, take theory and technique classes and sectionals, and hear guest artist recitals, ending the week with a concert for families. An audition-only Honors Division covers strings, piano and winds, brass and percussion. Teachers include professional musicians and university faculty, and the camp offers scholarships each summer.
