About
The High Country Jazz Festival takes place each June in Boone and Blowing Rock. The Appalachian Theatre presents it with Boone Sunrise Rotary and Appalachian State University's jazz studies program. Past lineups have included pianist Emmet Cohen's trio, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, the fusion band Spyro Gyra, saxophonist Miguel Zenón with pianist Luis Perdomo, and the duo Noel Freidline and Maria Howell. Some shows include special formats, such as onstage seating with a pre-concert reception. The host theatre is a restored 1938 movie house on King Street in downtown Boone. It closed in 2007 and reopened in 2019 as a performing arts center, and it presents concerts, films, opera broadcasts and theater.
