The New River Blues Festival is a one-day blues gathering held in a meadow beside the New River at the River House Inn in Grassy Creek, near West Jefferson. Now past its twentieth year, the festival keeps things deliberately small to hold on to what organizers call a friendly mountain vibe. Bands play through the afternoon, and recent lineups marked the 40th anniversary of The King Bees and featured acts such as Mojo Ike and Lady Val Woods. Guests bring lawn chairs, blankets and pop-up canopies, and it runs rain or shine. Food and drinks are sold on site, but coolers and pets aren't allowed. The River House Inn is a bed and breakfast.
