About
Raleigh Wide Open is a free two-day downtown festival of bluegrass, Americana, gospel and folk music, produced by PineCone, whose full name is the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music. It is the latest form of the festival locals simply call “Bluegrass,” part of a downtown tradition going back nearly 20 years, and it draws more than 200,000 people. The name dates to 2006, when Fayetteville Street reopened and downtown saw a cultural revival. With sets from bluegrass greats, Americana artists and gospel groups from Eastern North Carolina rooted in Black Church traditions, visitors can join community dances led by expert callers with old-time string bands, taught on site with no experience needed. Food trucks, artists and local businesses round out the weekend.
