The Historic Earle Theatre
About
The Earle Theatre in Mount Airy was built in 1938 by Earl Q. Benbow and Percy A. Boone and is run today by the Surry Arts Council. It was picked to premiere "Gone With the Wind" at the same time as Atlanta, with a $1 ticket that stirred local grumbling. By 1958, after television had shut other theatres, Stewart and Everett Theatres of Charlotte owned it and modernized it with air conditioning, oil heat and a wide screen; the old squirrel-cage fan, too big for the doors, still sits in the basement. The theatre seats 424 between reserved seats and balcony and hosts movies, concerts and presentations.
