Steep Canyon Rangers formed in North Carolina, and the band's music is shaped by both the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont. From the start, the group kept to traditional bluegrass forms while letting modern songwriting, literary influence and regional stories into its songs. That balance won respect from bluegrass and Americana fans alike, along with a GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Album for 2013's Nobody Knows You, nods for North Carolina Songbook (2020) and Rare Bird Alert (2012), and a place in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. Next Act, the band's 15th studio album, came out May 22, 2026, and returns to the bluegrass roots that first brought the members together: acoustic instruments, songs built for playing as an ensemble, and stories drawn from lived experience. The lineup is Graham Sharp on banjo, Mike Guggino on mandolin and mandola, Aaron Burdett on guitar, Nicky Sanders on fiddle, Mike Ashworth on drums, dobro and percussion, and Barrett Smith on bass and guitar, and all six sing.
