About
Womansong is the largest and longest-running women's community chorus in Asheville, founded in 1987 by Linda Metzner as a social-justice women's chorus and now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Every singer who identifies within the women's experience and sings treble is welcome, and up to seventy-five singers of varied ages, backgrounds and abilities take part. Dr. Allison Thorp, Director of Choral Activities at Western Carolina University, became Artistic Director in July 2022. Accompanist and composer Lytingale (Lois Henrickson) has written over 20 songs and arrangements for the chorus, including "Together We Can Change the World" and "Dress Like a Woman." Shiner Antiorio interprets the music in American Sign Language blended with dance, for Deaf and hearing audiences alike. Concerts feature live instrumentalists and sometimes dancing, drumming and poetry, and the chorus aims to nurture its community and honor cultural diversity.
