About
Boulevards is the funk project of Jamil Rashad, who takes cues from Prince, Rick James and Earth Wind & Fire. His debut LP, Groove!, released in 2016, is full of playful party songs that run from raw and risqué to soulful. Rashad's father was an R&B radio DJ who introduced him to jazz, blues and R&B, which led him into the local music scene young. As a teen in his hometown of Raleigh, NC, he played in punk and metal circles, and their precision and power still shape his writing. After art school and time in local bands, he came back to funk. Groove! focuses on rhythm and getting people dancing: "Patience" blends pop with vintage hip-hop, "Cold Call" builds a slow, hypnotic groove under synths, and "Weekend Love" and "Up On Your Love" bring disco pulses. Producers Roller Girl! and Taste Nasa, who worked on his earlier EP, returned for the album.
