About
The Choral Society of Durham is known for strong performances of major choral works with professional orchestras and regional and national soloists. A typical season brings three concerts: a holiday program in December, a winter program in February or March, and a spring program in May. About 140 singers take part, with 25-35 of them also in the separately rehearsed Chamber Choir. Jane Watkins Sullivan and Marian Wallace Smith founded it in 1949; it began as the Durham Oratorio Society, became the Durham Civic Choral Society in 1951 and took its current name in 1997. Since January 2020, under Artistic Director Rodney Wynkoop, it has worked to diversify its repertoire, partners, venues and membership, collaborating with groups such as NC Central University Choir, Raleigh Boychoir and Durham Children's Choir. New singers can audition.
