About
Dellie Norton was a ballad singer from North Carolina's Madison County who sang old unaccompanied ballads and love songs handed down through her family and Blue Ridge Mountain community. Her style was richly and spontaneously ornamented, with vocal hiccups and stretched notes, and her repertoire was mostly English and Scottish ballads such as "The House Carpenter." She also played banjo, quilted, wove and practiced herbal healing, which made her a favorite of folklorists. John Cohen recorded her in the 1960s for his High Atmosphere anthology and featured her in the film The End of an Old Song. Later she performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, TN, and in 1990 she received a North Carolina Heritage Award. In her 91 years she helped pass the songs to younger generations and earned national recognition.
