Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba
About
Kaira Ba, led by Diali Cissokho, explores spiritual songs, stories and rhythms from Senegal's ancient Mandé culture. Cissokho comes from a long line of hereditary griots, and he named the band "Kaira Ba," meaning "The Great Peace," for a value the group tries to express on stage. The band joins the kora, a 22-stringed bridge-harp, with electric guitar and a lively rhythm section. The band came together in January of 2011 in North Carolina, soon after Cissokho moved to the US, and has made three full-length albums, toured widely and traveled twice to Senegal. Its album The Great Peace earned a 2014 AFRIMA nomination for Best African Group, and Routes (2018), recorded in North Carolina and Senegal, drew strong reviews. The six-piece lineup is Diali Keba Cissokho with Jason Lentz, Peter Kimosh, Joe MacPhail, Austin McCall and Will Ridenour.
