Dirty Art Club began as a North Carolina duo of producers Matt Cagle and Madwreck. Their debut album, Heavy Starch, is an instrumental record built on dark, moody production, with sampling, analog synths and field recordings, and inspired by local artist Marcus Kiser's mix of comic art, social and political events and hip hop culture. After Heavy Starch, Madwreck left and the group became a solo project. A year later came Hexes, Matt Cagle's first solo album as Dirty Art Club, a short record that is dark and nearly disturbing yet strangely beautiful, a quality that runs through the project's work.
