About

Made up of top musicians, the John Brown Jazz Orchestra is a professional big jazz ensemble. Its repertoire runs from the Great American Songbook to current arrangements and spans every era of jazz, including music associated with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Mel Torme, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Woody Herman. The group plays in configurations of 12 to 24 pieces and offers concert programs built around Carolina natives such as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie and Lou Donaldson. Education is central to its work: the North Carolina Arts Council has chosen the orchestra for years to tour schools statewide, and it plays for children alongside its feature concerts. The band also appears in the film "One Night in Kernersville," which Rodrigo Dorfman directed; it won the 2011 Jury Award for BEST SHORT FILM at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
