Natural Born Leaders is a band whose music crosses rock, reggae, jazz, hip-hop and funk, praised by NPR Music and Live Music Daily and meant to ignore genre boundaries. Lead singer and songwriter Michael Martinez writes lyric-driven anthems full of social commentary and messages about standing up and dreaming big, heard on the second release Abominable Creatures. A live take of "Abominable Creatures," made for the 2018 NPR Tiny Desk contest, was picked for Weekend Edition with Scott Simon on NPR. On February 23rd 2018 the band headlined the Orange Peel in Asheville NC. The video for "Return of Jafar," from the EP About Time and directed by Martinez and saxophonist Ben Survant, was nominated for Best Director at the Music Video Asheville awards.
