About
Sassafras plays bluegrass out of the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills of North Carolina. It honors the Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs era while also reaching into progressive Newgrass. Its sets add country, folk, western swing and original songs. The band is Kent Dowell on banjo, Billy Gee on bass, Wes Tuttle on mandolin and fiddle, and Randy Gambill on guitar, with all four singing. On stage or in the studio, Sassafras has worked with artists including Charlie Waller, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor and Pete Wernick. Band members have played festivals and venues in the US and abroad, among them MerleFest, Walnut Valley Festival, Song of the Mountains, IBMA, the Grand Old Opry, Mean Fiddler in London and Rocky Top in Tokyo.
