About
Viv & Riley are Vivian Leva and Riley Calcagno, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists based in Durham, North Carolina. Their album Imaginary People came out September 15, 2023 on Free Dirt Records, and its ten tracks give new pop songs an indie roots finish. Rooted at first in the folk tradition, the duo pushed the production toward experiment, writing about finding a way into adulthood in an uncertain world. Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger produced the record, bringing a bright, layered sound that moves past their earlier country roots. The writing has shifted too, from spare, world-weary country songs to indie songs that are by turns sweetly sad and gently sardonic. The album is about honoring the past while taking a leap into new experiences.
