About Asheboro
Asheboro became the Randolph County seat in 1796 and takes its name from Samuel Ashe, an early governor. It stayed a small courthouse village until railroads arrived in 1889. When Acme Hosiery Mills opened in 1909 the town became a textile center. After World War II, plants added batteries, wire and food products. The state-owned North Carolina Zoo opened in 1974 and is the city’s main tourist attraction. Asheboro sits in the Piedmont but feels hilly because it lies within the Uwharrie Mountains. Sunset Avenue downtown won Great Main Street honors in 2015; the city earned an All-America City Award in 2016 and the Sunset Theater is on the National Register. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
