About Belmont

Belmont is a Gaston County city about 12 miles west of Charlotte, set on a peninsula where the Catawba and South Fork Catawba rivers form two arms of Lake Wylie. The area began as Garibaldi Station, a railroad stop from the 1870s, and was renamed Belmont in 1883. Benedictine monks founded Belmont Abbey in 1876. Its college and Gothic Revival basilica stand on a campus listed on the National Register. Chronicle Mills opened in 1901 and nearly twenty mills followed by 1930. However, most textile plants have since closed. The Downtown Belmont Historic District is on the National Register, the Belmont Historical Society runs a heritage center in the former R.L. Stowe home, and the Daniel Stowe Conservancy botanical garden lies southwest of town. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
  • Make sure local arts nonprofits file with an arts (NTEE “A”) code and the town’s address.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Belmont advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
