About Eden

Eden in Rockingham County was formed in 1967 when voters in Leaksville, Spray, Draper and a nearby sanitary district chose to consolidate. The name echoes the Land of Eden, as William Byrd II called his estate here in the 1700s. The city still has three downtowns in the former towns. B. Frank Mebane opened the first of his textile mills in 1893 and the company later known as Fieldcrest employed thousands of people. Mill closures around the turn of the century and the end of the Miller brewery hit the local economy hard. The Smith River runs through town to meet the Dan on the south side, and the Smith River Greenway follows its banks. Fall Riverfest each September celebrates the city’s art, history and rivers, and the Charlie Poole Music Festival honors the old-time banjoist. The Eden Museum opened in 2009. Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
