The town

About Holly Springs

Holly Springs is named for springs that feed a stream and small lake ringed by big holly trees. A village with a general store, a Baptist church and a Masonic lodge stood at the crossroads by 1800 and a sawmill and cotton gin came soon after. The Civil War left the community devastated, and a railroad through nearby Apex passed it by. The town incorporated in 1877 and merchant George Benton Alford led a revival. It stayed small for decades, then boomed after its first sewage plant in 1987 as growth spilled over from Cary and Apex. Drugmaker Novartis built a vaccine plant here. The library and a cultural-arts facility opened in 2006 and the Leslie-Alford-Mims House is on the National Register. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
