About Hope Mills

Hope Mills traces its start to 1766 when water power and timber drew a lumber camp, sawmill, grist mill and pottery business to the area. In 1839 a cotton mill run by power from the Hope Mills Dam was completed, and the milling industry that followed gave the town its name. Earlier names included Little Rockfish Village and Hope Mills Number One. Sherman’s troops burned the cotton mill and many other buildings during the Civil War. The town was chartered in 1891. Its center sits beside a dam on Little Rockfish Creek that forms Hope Mills Lake. The Hope Mills Historic District and Big Rockfish Presbyterian Church are on the National Register of Historic Places. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Hope Mills advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
