About Kinston
Kinston is the county seat of Lenoir County, on the Neuse River in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. Created in 1762 as Kingston to honor King George III, it dropped the g in 1784 after the Revolution. Richard Caswell, the state’s first governor, made his home here. Civil War battles were fought nearby, and the remains of the ironclad CSS Neuse are shown at an interpretive center downtown. The town grew as a tobacco and cotton trading center, and it won the All-America City Award in 2009. Cultural stops include the Kinston Center for the Arts, the Cultural Heritage Museum and the Neuseway Nature Center and Planetarium. Vivian Howard and Ben Knight opened The Chef & the Farmer downtown, and Mother Earth Brewing was founded in Kinston. Source: Wikipedia

Teacher’s remarks
The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
