About Knightdale

Knightdale is a Wake County town named for Henry Haywood Knight, a landowner who gave land to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad to bring service to the area. The railroad arrived soon after his death in 1904 and many older homes were built for railroad workers and their families. The town was incorporated in 1927. Tobacco and cotton farms came first, worked in part by enslaved people at plantations such as Midway and Beaver Dam. A 1940 fire destroyed several downtown businesses and homes, and residents rebuilt. From the 1960s new businesses moved out to U.S. 64 and the population climbed sharply after 1990. Knightdale Station Park opened in 2013 as part of a downtown revitalization effort and added an amphitheater in 2018. The Mingo Creek Greenway links to Raleigh’s Neuse River Trail. Beaver Dam and Midway Plantation are on the National Register. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

                Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

                Next steps

                • Ask venues, museums and galleries to claim their listings and add seating capacity.
                • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
                • Make sure local arts nonprofits file with an arts (NTEE “A”) code and the town’s address.
                • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
                • Request the full Knightdale advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.

Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
