About Lincolnton

Lincolnton is the Lincoln County seat, on the Catawba’s South Fork, northwest of Charlotte. In 1780 the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill was fought on the future town site, and local Loyalists were defeated. After the Revolution that site was picked as the seat of the new county, and both were named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln. Using the river’s water power, Michael Schenck built the first textile mill in North Carolina here in 1813 and cotton processing became a major industry. On court days farmers came to town to trade. The city has three historic districts and many National Register buildings, including Shadow Lawn, Woodside and Pleasant Retreat Academy. Lincolnton annexed Boger City in 1986 and has grown since 1980 with the Charlotte metro area. Source: Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)

Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.

Next steps

  • List every recurring arts festival with its dates, so it counts.
  • Ask venues and arts groups to post their dates or an events feed, so activity is measured, not missed.
  • Send us the adopted arts budget lines, grant programs and arts office details, so support is counted from evidence.
  • Add founding years to long-running venues, festivals and arts groups.
  • Request the full Lincolnton advisory report from the Ray Arts Foundation.
Not yet measured: Heritage. Missing information is never counted as zero; the grade uses the subjects that are measured. About these grades. Ray Arts Index v1.2, published 2026-10-15. Every subject is measured per resident against fixed national reference points, so town size never changes a grade, and a grade of C means the national typical level. Local government support and arts education carry 30% of the weight. How it’s calculated.
