About Morehead City

Morehead City sits on a peninsula between Bogue Sound and the Newport River in Carteret County, part of the Crystal Coast. Investors planned it in the 1850s as a deepwater port for timber, and it is named for Governor John Motley Morehead, one of them. The railroad from Goldsboro to New Bern was finished in 1858 and the town incorporated in 1860. Federal troops occupied it in 1862. Later the Atlantic Hotel and the Summer Capital by the Sea slogan made it a summer destination in the 1880s. Fishermen from Shackleford Banks settled here and founded a lasting fishing industry. Today the port, ecotourism and retirees drive the economy, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has run since 1957 and divers explore nearby wrecks such as U-352. Teacher’s remarks

The Ray Arts Index gives extra weight to local government support and arts education, because public investment in the arts, and in teaching it, is how creative communities grow.
